Thinking About Buying Second-Hand Tech for Your Small Business? Read This First...

WHY should I consider buying second-hand tech?

We can all agree that brand new laptops, tablets and mobile phones can be pricey! Buying second-hand tech is a smart way to save a few quid while still getting the tools you need to run your small business efficiently.

Refurbished and pre-owned devices are becoming increasingly popular among small business owners, and they’re a great way to reduce your carbon footprint too.

But not all used tech is created equal. So, before you click “buy”, here are a few questions you need to be asking first so you can save time, money, and avoid any headaches later down the line:

1. Is the device still supported with updates?

Why does it matter:

  • When a device is no longer supported, it means no more security updates.
  • This means weaker security, increased exposure to cyberattacks and to protect your information you should always be able to update the device you’re using to the latest version.

What should you do:

  • Remember that different brands will have different support timelines.
  • Check a device is compatible with the current version of a Microsoft Professional OS (i.e. in 2025 this would be Windows 11 Pro).
  • If updates are stopping soon, just walk away!

2. How old is the device?

Why does it matter:

  • Older devices may be sluggish, offer limited features, struggle to run the latest apps, or they might not support the apps your team need at all.

What should you do:

  • Think about what you need the device to do.
  • Check the original launch date of the device.
  • Compare performance reviews of newer models.

3. What is the battery like?

Why does it matter:

  • A worn battery can disrupt your workflow and may lead to extra costs.
  • You need a device with a healthy battery to ensure the device performs reliably, allowing you to work without frequent interruptions or being tied to a charger.

What should you do:

  • Ask for the battery health percentage, or check it yourself if possible (especially on laptops and smartphones).
  • Look into the cost and availability of a replacement battery (particularly for older or less common models).
  • Factor a new battery cost into the overall price of the device to ensure it’s still good value.

4. Are there any visible faults or damage?

Why does it matter:

  • Physical damage like cracks, dents, or worn edges can be a red flag. It often tells you the device has been dropped, not been looked after, or has even deeper internal issues that aren’t immediately obvious.
  • Water damage is especially problematic. Look out for rust, corrosion, or discolouration around ports or buttons as it may suggest liquid exposure, which can lead to serious performance problems.

What should you do:

  • Check for cracks, dents, and loose parts.
  • Buying in person? Inspect it thoroughly.
  • Buying online? Request clear photos from all angles.
  • Focus on these key areas: screen, ports, keyboard, and corners.
  • If it looks damaged, don’t risk it. Hidden faults will cause problems later.

5. Do all accessories come with it?

Why does it matter:

  • If the original chargers, cables, or adaptors are missing this will add to the overall cost.

What should you do:

  • Confirm everything’s included (power blocks, cables, cases, software licences).
  • If you need to purchase items separately, get a clear estimate of the added costs.

6. Is there a return policy or warranty?

Why does it matter:

  • No warranty or return option means you’re taking on ALL the risk.
  • If the device breaks or has issues, you’ll have no support and no way to recover your money.
  • It’s crucial to know the seller’s terms upfront, so you’re not left out of pocket if something goes wrong.

What should you do:

  • Prioritise sellers or platforms offering at least a short warranty or returns window.

7. What’s the real cost?

Why does it matter:

  • You want to get the best deal. Whilst used tech can offer great value, it’s essential you compare prices because some second-hand sellers charge more than the device is worth and you don't want to be overcharged.
  • It's important to always shop around first and check multiple sources before you commit.
  • A brand-new device might not always the more expensive option in the long run.

What should you do:

  • Compare prices with new and other used devices. If there’s little difference, buying a new device may be a better fit for your needs.

8. Can I test it before buying?

Why does it matter:

  • Think “better to be safe than sorry” before committing to a purchase. If you can test the device beforehand, it significantly reduces the risk. You don’t want to end up with a faulty device just because you didn’t get the chance to test it out first.

What should you do:

  • Meet the seller in person and inspect the device yourself.
  • If you can't meet the seller, ask for a video showing the device in use so you can confirm it works as expected.
  • If you’re buying from a major retailer, test it in-store before committing to avoid unwanted surprises.

If You Ask The Right Questions!  You won't get caught out when buying second-hand tech!

  • Always check for software compatibility, device warranty and factory reset status.
  • Only consider buying if there’s a return policy or warranty (especially when buying online).
  • Try before you buy (if possible), test in person, or ask for a live video demo.
